A friend and I decided to head out to the old section of Dhaka again last week. I really do love this city when I have the chance to explore it. Everything is so interesting, and the people are so helpful and friendly. Unlike Saigon, I never feel like people are really trying to cheat or harm me here.
We just parked the car and started wandering. We walked through a huge park where one guy was spearfishing from the shore. He was very patient, and every time he threw the spear it would come back with a fish. One kid was selling unripe guava. They slice them and serve them with salted cayenne pepper on the top. I usually avoid street food (especially here), but I had to try it – a crunchy, spicy, salty delight. We asked the price and he sheepishly said 100 taka (about $1.50). The fishermen nearby shouted out “10 taka – don’t pay him more.” We laughed and gave him 20 for the effort, and he was thrilled. We then hit a chai stand for some of the best tea I’ve ever had. It was crowded, but people immediately insisted that we take their seats. The guy boiled the tea leaves, then strained the tea into glass cups and added a fair amount of sugar and condensed milk. I have got to get my cook to start making tea this way. And it was only 5 taka (about 7 cents) per cup. We also wandered through flower markets, and the art school at the university where the students were out in the gardens painting. What a relaxing and fun day!
